Promoting art awareness and appreciation in the Eastern Panhandle
The Firehouse Gallery is an artists cooperative which first began its operation on October 2, 2011 as the Washington Street Artists Co-op. Although we have recently changed our name, the Gallery is continuing a tradition of providing a community space for local artists and artisans from across the West Virginia Panhandle to exhibit their work and interact with the community. We strive to support our fellow artists as we create, show, share, and teach with the goal of furthering creativity and expanding interest and participation in the arts among Charles Town.

DESCRIPTION: Parchment Craft is the craft of decorating parchment or vellum using various techniques that include the drawing or tracing of images, the painting and/or coloring of those drawn or traced images, embossing, perforating, or stippling or cutting decorative borders and internal embellishments. The finished work can be a card, a home decorative item, a religious item or anything you wish. It can be 2D or 3D. Originating as a craft prior to the 14th century, it began in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Everything was hand-made. Before the printing press, the images were cut in wood and engraved on copper plates. They were printed in large numbers on parchment and later hand-made paper.
You will participate in an ancient craft that predates the 14th century. You will use modern materials to produce beautiful and timeless works on the vellum paper made for this craft. Once you learn the basic techniques, you will be able to create a beginning to potentially intermediate parchment craft work. Creating a parchment craft work is a peaceful endeavor and can be as detailed as you wish.
