An Introduction to the Illuminated Letters

Come explore the ancient art of the illuminated letter! To illuminate means
to enlighten with brilliant colors and to use gold and, at times, silver to embellish
manuscripts. Many of us are familiar with the beautiful, illuminated manuscripts housed in
museums.
In this workshop, we will use modern materials to create the ornamented illuminated
letter “K” from the Ottonian historical lettering styles. We will work with gouache and
watercolor gold on hot press watercolor paper.
Subsequent workshops will build upon this introductory workshop and use historical
materials (egg tempera and/or glair) and will include gilding with gold leaf. An advanced
letter design will be introduced to further develop your skills in this art of antiquity.

Beginner Level. Open to adults and children ages 13 and up
Cost: $82 per person. The cost of the workshop includes three hours of instruction ($40)
and all supplies and materials ($42).
